FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help

You may have some questions about our practice and psychiatry services, so we’ve put together a list of our most common queries. If your question isn’t listed here, please contact us directly.

What is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed extra training to specialise in mental health. They are qualified to diagnose and treat mental health issues, emotional problems, and provide therapies such as counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy and medications.

Psychiatrists have a deep understanding of physical and mental health, and how they affect each other. They assess your mental and physical symptoms and work with you to develop a treatment plan. Psychiatrists provide care to those with mental health issues, including schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, anxiety and OCD.

The main difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is that a psychiatrist can prescribe and monitor medication, while a psychologist delivers psychological therapies and does not prescribe medication.
